NIOS

Established under the Ministry of Human Resource Development by the Government of India, the National Institute of Open Schooling or what is popularly known as NIOS provides an open learning platform for learners. NIOS has been set up for the universalization of education and to promote equality and justice in society through the evolution of a learning society. It has the world’s largest open schooling system educating lakhs of students annually.

Introduction about the Course

The Secondary Class and the Senior Secondary Class are the two most widely conducted NIOS courses. Learners have to appear for a few mandatory subjects and a few additional subjects depending on their choice. The course study material is available in various forms like printed material, audio-visual content and personal contact programmes.

NIOS Class 10

The NIOS for Class 10 provides a way for learners who could not join the formal schooling system to complete their Secondary School Certificate Examination. Students who had to leave out the formal schooling due to financial reasons or any social reasons can join this flexible course and clear their Class 10th examination. The examinations are conducted twice a year in an offline form. Students have to choose from amongst 28 subjects in eight languages ((Hindi, English, Urdu, Marathi, Telugu, Gujarati, Malayalam and Odia) to get the NIOS Secondary School Certificate. The course also has a provision to add Vocational Subjects to the Academic Subjects.

NIOS Class 12

The NIOS for Class 12th or the Senior Secondary Certification Course is the most popular course available under the NIOS platform that aims to train students with not only academic skills but also technical skills that make them suitable for pursuing higher education or enable them to start an industrial unit or take up an entry-level skilled vocational job in the industry. The course for Class 12th is also a flexible course that can be self-paced. Students can decide to appear for examinations conducted in two blocks every year. The Senior Secondary School Certification course is available in 5 languages and students can choose from amongst 28 subjects.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the NIOS course for Class 10th, the student should meet the following criteria:

1. The student should have passed the Class 8 examination

2. The student should have valid age proof showing that the student is above the age of 14.

3. Since the aim of NIOS is the universalization of secondary education, a self-certificate stating a student has studied enough to pursue a secondary course is also eligible for admission to the NIOS 10th class.

4. For students who have previously studied at secondary level but didn’t clear the examination can also gain admission to NIOS 10th to complete their course or improve their performance.

While filling out the admission form, a student needs to submit the following in an online form:

• A copy of the birth certificate

• A copy of address proof

• 1 photograph

To be eligible for the NIOS course for Class 12th, the student should meet the following criteria:

1. The student should have a minimum age of 15 with a valid age proof

2. The student should have passed the SSC or Class 10th examination successfully.

3. For students who have previously studied at senior secondary level but didn’t clear the examination can also gain admission to NIOS 12th to complete their course or improve their performance.

While filling out the admission form, a student needs to submit the following in an online form:

• Secondary mark sheet

• Birth certificate

• Address proof

• Photographs

Admission Process

The entire admission process for NIOS Class 10th and Class 12th Courses is online. You have to visit the online portal at https://www.sdmis.nios.ac.in , read the instructions, register and fill in all the required details and upload the necessary documents when prompted to do so. You need to keep the documents like Aadhar Card (or any valid Identity document like Passport, Driving License, Ration Card, Bank Pass Book, etc), Last Mark-sheet, photograph, other certificates like Domicile / Caste-certificate if necessary while filling the form. Curriculum

Students taking the NIOS 10th course need to complete and pass a minimum of 5 subjects including one or a maximum of 2 languages listed under Group A and the other three or four subjects listed under Group B. However, a student is free to pursue additional subjects depending on his / her preference. The following table gives a list of courses available for secondary NIOS courses:

• Group-A

o Hindi, English, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Sanskrit, Punjabi, Assamese, Nepali, Malayalam, Odia, Arabic, Persian, Tamil, Sindhi (Choose 1 or maximum 2 amongst these languages)

• Group-B

o Mathematics, Science and Technology, Social Science, Economics, Business Studies, Home Science, Data Entry Operation, Psychology, Indian Culture & Heritage, Painting, Data Entry Operations, Accountancy, Hindustani Music, Carnatic Sangeet (Choose 3 or 4 subjects from these.)

• Indian Knowledge Tradition

o Veda Adhyan, Sanskrit Vyakaran, Bharatiya Darshan, Sanskrit Sahitya

Senior Secondary

Students taking the NIOS 12th course need to complete and pass a minimum of 5 subjects including one or a maximum of 2 languages listed under Group A and the other three or four subjects listed under other groups. However, a student is free to pursue additional subjects depending on his / her preference. The learner can opt for only one subject from each of Group C, D, E and F. The following table gives a list of courses available for the senior secondary NIOS course:

• Group-A

o Hindi, English, Bangla, Tamil, Odia, Urdu, Gujarati, Sanskrit, Punjabi

• Group-B

o Mathematics, Home Science, Psychology, Geography, Economics, Business Studies, Painting, Data entry Operation

• Indian Knowledge Tradition#

o Veda Adhyan, Sanskrit Vyakaran, Bharatiya Darshan, Sanskrit Sahitya

• Group-C

o Physics, History, Library and Information Sci., Environmental Science

• Group-D

o Chemistry, Political Science, Mass Communication, Military Studies

• Group-E

o Biology, Accountancy, Introduction to Law, Military History

• Group-F

o Computer Science, Sociology, Tourism, Physical Education and Yoga

Future Scope and Advantages

Passing a NIOS Class 10th exam or the 12th Class examination is equivalent to passing a 10th or 12th class examination from any recognized board in India. The passing certification from NIOS makes you eligible for getting admission to all courses that you can pursue by clearing the examinations through regular state / national boards. Hence, the career options that one can pursue after NIOS 12th are manifold. One can opt for doing BTech to become an engineer or can become a BSc for specialization in various fields of science. One may even opt to do a BCom, MBBS, BHMS and pursue a career in commerce or medicine. One can also opt to pursue courses in Fashion Designing, Mass Media Communications, Hotel Management and so on. In fact, there are limitless career options available after passing 12th Class NIOS.

The main advantage of the NIOS course is that a learner who had to drop out of regular schooling due to any reason can resume studies through an open or distance education-based format and can ultimately join mainstream courses for graduation.
